Exploited Workers: The Mushroom Covenant

Speaking of endangered species relocating for economic opportunity. There was a good piece in the Irish Times last Saturday about The Mushroom Covenant, which was written by the Latvian journalist Laima Muktupavela. She came to Ireland to work as a mushroom picker in County Meath, working for one euro per hour, around one-seventh of the minimum wage. The book looks at the experiences of Latvian workers in Ireland and the social disintegration of Latvia as all of the young and ablebodied hoof it off to Ireland, the promised land. The book is a best seller in Latvia, required reading almost. But how come nobody went after the farmer in County Meath for exploiting migrant workers? There are laws, you know?
